Background of the Study

Academic guidance plays a crucial role in helping university students navigate their educational journey, providing advice on course selection, career paths, and academic challenges. Traditional academic guidance services at universities are often limited by the availability of academic advisors and the complexity of individual student needs. An AI-powered chatbot can provide real-time, personalized academic guidance, helping students make informed decisions about their studies and career paths. This study aims to design an AI-powered chatbot for Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, to enhance the academic advising process.

The AI chatbot will utilize machine learning algorithms and natural language processing (NLP) to understand students' queries and provide relevant information on course requirements, academic deadlines, and career opportunities. By offering 24/7 access, the chatbot will enable students to receive timely responses to their academic questions, regardless of the time or day. The system will also be able to provide personalized recommendations based on the student’s academic history, helping students navigate course choices, understand prerequisites, and even plan their academic trajectory for graduation.

At ABU, Zaria, the introduction of an AI-powered chatbot could ease the burden on academic advisors and provide students with continuous support. This is especially critical given the large student population at ABU, where personalized academic guidance can often be delayed or insufficient. With AI, students would receive consistent, accurate, and personalized advice, contributing to better academic planning and improved student outcomes.

Statement of the Problem

Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, has a large student body, and academic guidance is crucial to help students succeed in their studies. However, the traditional academic advising system faces challenges due to limited availability of advisors, long response times, and a lack of personalized advice for each student. The increasing number of students requires a scalable and efficient system to provide academic guidance. The AI-powered chatbot aims to address these issues by providing real-time, accessible, and personalized support to students, helping them make informed decisions about their academic journey.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To design an AI-powered chatbot for academic guidance for students at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

  2. To assess the effectiveness of the AI-powered chatbot in providing timely and relevant academic advice to students.

  3. To evaluate student satisfaction with the AI-powered chatbot in terms of accessibility, accuracy, and helpfulness of the guidance provided.

Research Questions

  1. How effective is the AI-powered chatbot in providing accurate academic guidance to students at ABU, Zaria?

  2. How do students at ABU, Zaria engage with the AI-powered chatbot, and what is their level of satisfaction?

  3. What are the perceived benefits and challenges of using the AI-powered chatbot for academic guidance at ABU, Zaria?

Research Hypotheses

  1. The AI-powered chatbot will significantly improve the timeliness and accuracy of academic guidance provided to students at ABU, Zaria.

  2. Students will report high levels of satisfaction with the AI-powered chatbot for academic guidance.

  3. The AI-powered chatbot will lead to better academic planning and decision-making among students at ABU, Zaria.

Significance of the Study

The study is significant because it seeks to enhance the academic advising process at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, by introducing an AI-powered chatbot. The findings will contribute to improving student engagement, satisfaction, and academic planning, which can positively impact student retention and success. The results may also serve as a model for other institutions looking to implement AI-powered solutions for academic guidance.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on the design and evaluation of an AI-powered chatbot for academic guidance at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. The chatbot will use natural language processing and machine learning to provide relevant academic information to students. The study will not include long-term usage or large-scale implementation. Limitations may include the accuracy of the chatbot's responses based on the data it has been trained on and the potential resistance from students or staff to using AI-driven academic support systems.
